LawBiz® TIPS – Week of April 21, 2015

LawBiz(r) newsletter

This last week, we took California weather to Chicago ... Not only did we have a great time re-connecting with family and friends, we met and talked with new and maturing technology principals for practicing lawyers. While being a competent lawyer includes technology skills, the keynote presenter, Nick Carr, confirmed that newer/faster technology has to be filtered through the human experience to be effective. In fact, Toyota "retired" some robotics units for this reason. Technology will never replace the human experience, only enable us to perform better.

WordPerfect is Alive and Well

I visited the WordPerfect Office booth at ABA TechShow 2015. I have always liked WP. Here are some interesting facts that learned last week talking with the people at the booth.

WordPerfect Office X7 can now create a fillable PDF Form, no extra software required. You just create your document, add PDF fields, then publish to PDF and send. Not only can you create forms, you can also open a scanned PDF file and WordPerfect will OCR it and change it to text. You can then reuse it in other programs, save as Word (DOCX is best), PDF or any of the other 60 file formats.

There also is special pricing for bar association members. As a member, you can get up to 50% off of WordPerfect Office X7 and their new Table of Authorities tool, Perfect Authority. Check with your Bar and with Corel.

Perfect Authority is an add-on to WordPerfect that finds your cases and statutes so you don't have to hand-mark anymore. It supports the Bluebook and California Style, and can be customized for output formats. You can download a trial at www.wordperfect.com and see how it works on your briefs.

They were also demo-ing PDF Fusion at the booth. This program is included in the special pricing and can open over 100 file formats without the corresponding software on the PC. Do you ever get a WordStar or old file? PDF Fusion can open it so you can save as PDF or DOC. The program also allows you to add annotations, redaction and sticky notes.

Tune in next week for more ideas I gathered from TechShow.
