Success: Don't Hold Your Breath; Make It Happen
A man holding his breath while driving through an Oregon tunnel in late May passed out and caused a wreck that, fortunately, involved only non-life-threatening injuries.
The police did not know why he was holding his breath, but speculation in the media is that it was related to superstition or some sort of game.
Holding your breath is not the smartest thing to do for a number of reasons, not the least of which is fainting and causing an accident. For most people, "holding your breath" is a term that is not usually taken quite so literally. For most people, "holding your breath" means waiting in anticipation. But in the business of law, sitting around and waiting is not the smartest thing to do. Rather, you should take charge of your own success and go after it instead of waiting for it to happen to you.
How do you make success happen? The following are some pointers:
Make a plan, which includes preparing and agreeing to plan, identifying goals, creating the marketing plan, creating the financial plan, and evaluating and revising the plan.
Sort out your priorities so that you focus on what's important.
Get on top of your financial situation.
Remember that the client comes first. Without clients, you have no business.
Find something you love to do. In other words, find an area of the law that will be a satisfying career for you.
Never stop learning, even beyond the minimum continuing legal education requirements.
Develop a knowledge of business.
Be a problem solver, which includes thinking about the long-term effects of actions.
Make yourself invaluable so that clients feel that you are the only lawyer for them.
By incorporating this advice into your business, you will stay conscious and on the road to success.
